Born in Ehime prefecture, Japan in 1947. After graduating from university he became a junior instructor at the
JKA. He developed a reputation as a lethal fighter in competition. Following the death of
Nakayama in 1986, and the JKA split into two factions, Yahara joined the group led by
Tetsuhiko Asai and was appointed as Chief Instructor. When they lost the court battle for
the official JKA title, however, Asai and Yahara parted ways and Yahara formed his own group, the KWF
(Karate-no-michi World Federation).
