Ueshiba, Morihei (1883-1969)

Developed Aikido after studying daito-ryu Aiki jutsu with Sokaku Takeda. Often referred to as O Sensei Ueshiba.

Sensei Ueshiba started his training in 1901 when he was briefly introduced to Tenjin Shin'yo-ryu Jujutsu. He joined the army in 1903 and saw active combat duty in the Sino-russian war. He first met Sokaku Takeda in 1915 and received his kyoji dairi (teaching assistant) certificate from him 7 years later. His mastery of jujutsu, spear fighting and fencing left him dissatisfied and he searched for deeper significance to life. Through the combination of his martial training and his spiritual ideologies he created aikido first referring to it as such in 1942.
