Founder of Isshin-Ryu karate.
He started learning shuri-te aged 8 from his uncle and then later from Chotoku Kyan. He also received instruction from Chujun Miyagi, founder of Goju-Ryu, from the shuri-te master Choki Motobu, and ancient weapons arts from Shinken Taira.
After World War II, Shimabuku founded Isshin-ryu, "One Heart Method".
