Sambo (the name is a contraction of the Russian phrase for "Self defense without weapons", Som-oborona Bes Orusyia. ),
first synthesized in the
former Soviet Union during the reign of Stalin, is both a martial art and a combative sport.
Based largely upon Greco-Roman wrestling and indigenous Russian, Georgian and Turkish grappling
systems, Sambo is known best for its dynamic movement and extensive sophisticated array of joint-locking techniques.
