Sakugawa studied under an Okinawa master of tode called Takahara. He learned White Crane style chuan fa from Kong Su Kung, the Chinese military attache to the Okinawan court. The Okinawan reading of the ideographs of Kong Su Kung can be read Kushanku and sakugawa is often credited with having created the kata Kushanku, which would form the basis of the shotokan katas Kanku Dai and Kanku Sho.
