Ronin

During the peaceful period following the unification of Japan by the great Shoguns Hideyoshi and Ieyasu, the provincial armies were disbanded and many of the samurai became redundant. Many of them wandered the country entering into duels or looking for work teaching fencing (Kendo). These wandering samurai were known as ronin (or "wave man").
