Miyage, Chojun (1888-1953)

Chojun Miyagi began his training in Okinawa in 1900, studying Naha-te under Ryuko Aragaki. Two years later he was introduced to Kanryo Higashionna and soon became his uchi deschi. After the death of his teacher in 1915 he travelled to Fuzhou, China to further his research. When he returned to Okinawa he taught martial arts in his home town of Naha. He travelled frequently to mainland Japan to raise awareness of his martial art. In Tokyo, many martial artists asked his students what school of martial arts they were from, and since Naha-te had no formal name, they could not answer. Sensei Miyagi decided on the name Goju-Ryu, meaning "hard and soft school". He passed on the heritage of Goju-Ryu to his personal disciple, Anichi Miyagi.
