Mabuni, Kenwa (1887-1952)

Founder of Shito-ryu. Born in Okinawa where he learnt Shuri-te from Ankoh Itosu and Naha-te from Kanryu Higashionna. He also studied White Crane Ch'uan Fa from a Chinese merchant and some weapon forms from Arakaki.

Sensei Mabuni first started teaching in Japan in the 1920's when he moved to Osaka. He was calling his style Hanko-ryu (Half-hard style) but changed it to Shito-ryu in the 1930's.
