Kung Fu

Translated "Hard Work", Kung Fu (pronounced Gung Foo) has a meaning beyond martial arts, but is normally taken to mean the Chinese fighting arts. Martial arts in China can be traced back reliably to the Chou Dynasty c800BC, with both boxing and later wrestling being evident. The largest influence on Kung Fu was from the Shaolin temple in Honan province. Many temple and non-temple styles have developed, the non-temple styles being developed by families, passed from one generation to the next. The major styles of kung fu are Tiger, Dragon, Snake, Crane, Eagle, Wing Chun and Hung Gar.
