Kendo

Japanese art of fencing. Kendo developed from the heritage of the samurai, the sword bearing warriors dominant for some 800 years in Japan. After the Meiji Restoration the Samurai fell out of favour and the sword was no longer used as a military weapon but was practised by some as a sport. From these activities evolved modern Kendo, using bamboo weapons and lightweight armour to reduce the chance of injury.

Kendo is a gendai budo form.
