Kali

Martial art of the Philippines. It includes empty handed fighting as well as weapons: The stick and the knife are most common but some styles also teach staff, nunchaku, whip, projectile weapons and grappling.

The orignial art was developed by the native population and was in part based on a wavy edged wooden sword, the "kalis". These weapons proved fatal to Ferdinand Magellan and his men in 1521 when they landed on the islands, despite their superior metal armour and weapons. After the Spanish took over the Philippines, kali was banned and the traditional weapons confiscated. Kali evolved with the use of sticks ("baston") being adopted and the name of the art changing to the Spanish "arnis de mano". Today kali, arnis and (as it is also known) escrima are taught around the world.
