Itosu, Ankoh (1830-1915)

Master of Shuri-te who studied under Sokon Matsumura. He worked alongside Matsumura as the secretary and translator to the King of Okinawa but was presumably also an apprentice bodyguard to the King under Matsumura. He trained and worked alongside Matsumura for 30 years. He was renouned for having great strength in his upper body and is said to have been able to withstand great blows. His students included Gichin Funakoshi, founder of Shotokan karate, and Kenwa Mabuni, founder of Shito-Ryu.

In 1901, he introduced karate into public schools.
