Hand Techniques

There are a wide variety of hand techniques in the martial arts.

Karate systems contain the following hand techniques (te waza):

  • Oi-tsuki (stepping punch)
  • Gyaku-tsuki (reverse punch)
  • Kizami-tsuki (Front hand punch)
  • Kagi-tsuki (Hook punch)
  • Choku-tsuki (Straight punch)
  • Empi-uchi (elbow strike) not strictly speaking a hand technique because the striking part is the elbow.
  • Uraken-uchi (backfist strike)
  • Haito-uchi (Ridgehand strike)
  • Tettsui-uchi (Hammerfist strike)
  • Shuto-uchi (knifehand strike)
  • Nukite-uchi (spearhand strike)
