Foot Techniques

Foot techniques appear in most martial arts, and are an important component of Taekwondo, karate, and Ch'uan Fa styles, in particular in Northern Shaolin. Foot techniques can be in the form of kicks or foot-sweeps.

Karate systems contain the following foot techniques (ashi waza):

  • mai geri (front kick)
  • yoko geri (side kick)
  • ushiro geri (back kick)
  • mawashi geri (roundhouse kick)
  • ura-mawashi geri (reverse-roundhouse kick)
  • ushiro-mawashi geri (back-roundhouse kick)
  • fumikomi (stamping kick)
  • ashi barai (foot sweep)
