Egami, Shigeru (1912-1981)

Shigeru Egami was one of Sensei Funakoshi's earliest students and became his successor as head of the shotokai organisation. Egami was first introduced to martial arts with kendo, judo and aikido. He met Funakoshi when he began at Wasada University at the age of 18 and helped in the establishment of karate there. He followed Funakoshi around Japan, demonstrating karate and taught karate at Universities.

During his life, Shigeru Egami emphasised the spiritual and philosophical aspects of karate-do and believed that all competitive, sports oriented aspects of karate should be avoided.
