Chibana, Chosin (1886-1969)

Began Shuri-te training in 1900, studying under Ankoh Itosou. He remained a student under Master Itosu for 13 years and trained alongside great martial artists like Kenwa Mabuni and Gichin Funakoshi. In 1920 he opened dojos in Shuri and Naha and came to call his system Shorin-Ryu. He later moved to mainland Japan and instructed at Takushoku, Tyo and Hihon Universities. In 1956 He founded the Okinawa Karate Federation and made efforts to unite the main Okinawan fighting styles.
