Capoeira

Brazilian weaponless fighting form which uis characterised dance-like, and often acrobatic, movements.

Capoeira is believed to have its roots in a fighting system developed by African slaves brought over to work Brazilian plantations by the Portuguese about 300 years ago. It is possible that the dance-like nature of Capoeira served to hide the true fighting nature of the movements. It was outlawed by the Portuguese in 1892 but after Brazilian independance it was legalised and became the national sport.
